Could Kodak Win Against Java Affect Smalltalks?
posted by Peter William Lount

Eastman Kodak Co. will return to U.S. District Court next week to seek $1 billion in damages from Sun Microsystems Inc. now that a federal jury has ruled in its favor in a dispute over the Java computer language.

The jury decided in Rochester on Friday that Sun infringed on technology belonging to Kodak when it developed and introduced Java more than a decade ago. The computer language is now used heavily by software developers, on the Internet and in computer schools.

JFengel asks a highly relevant question: "They seem actually to patent object-oriented programming, but they reference the Smalltalk documentation so presumably they're patenting some enhancement. I've been unable to determine what that enhancement is over Smalltalk, so I can't say if Java infringes on it or not."

Update: Sun Settles with Kodak for USD$92 Million!

The Software Industry is Dead? No Way!
posted and written by Peter William Lount

Interview with Tom Nies, President of Cincom Systems, Inc. and Futurementary (a commentary creating the future) by Peter William Lount

"Recently, one prominent figure in the software industry said that the industry is dead. Was he correct? Will only the strong survive?"

"We interviewed Tom Nies, President of Cincom, to get his views on this statement and his thoughts on the future of the software industry. As the longest-serving CEO in the industry (35 years), Tom sees a much different software industry thats ready to reach its full potential." - Software Business Journal

"We are not just relying on human ingenuity and inventiveness any longer. Weve got powerful levers. Instead of pulleys and winches to lever up muscles, we have computers to lever our minds. But, all of this technology, everything, revolves around software. The software industry will be a very critical industry until the day we decide wed prefer to work harder and longer with our backs, rather than further lever our minds. Surely, no one will decide to do that." - Tom Nies.

IBM Honors Think Pad Warranty
written by Peter William Lount
July 21, 2004

Just slighly over three years ago (in 2001) I purchased an awesome top of the line (for the time, now it's run of the mill but still capable) ThinkPad A22p laptop from IBM. I paid through the teeth for it and it's been very good to me ever since. However, just nineteen days after the warranty expired the hard drive died an ugly death with very loud screeches that would make your blood curdle.

After one phone call to their support help desk I was referred to the "IBM Call Department" (that's call as in making a decision) after I requested that IBM honor the warranty. Two phone calls and a fax of my original purchase invoice with a politely written letter requesting a new hard drive and a recovery CD (with the OS and IBM ThinkPad goodeis) and they agreed!

Little Brother Proliferation
written by Peter William Lount
July 21, 2004

This item about "privacy zones" is important to anyone who cares about their privacy, life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

England is an example of a society that has had a massive build up of cameras by private security and police forces alike. It's happening every in North America.

Little Brothers proliferate as advances in technology bring spying, information gathering and processing, and warfare technologies within reach of the masses. Groups of Little Brothers directing their energies and focus on specific goals such as corporate advantage or political motives shift the balance of power. May we survive these distrubances and use technology to forward us.
