Smallworld for Java, yet another Smalltalk implementation
written by Peter William Lount
Version 1, July 20, 2004

The last few years has seen an explosion in the numbers and quality of Smalltalk systems being developed. The lastest one to come to my attention is a port or rewrite of Little Smalltalk to Java by Timothy Budd. Download a copy of Smallworld for Java and let me know how it works for you.

"There are a number of differences between Little Smalltalk and Smalltalk-80. Cascades are not supported. Symbols have been eliminated (I use strings for message selectors)."

"Version 0.8 is the first public release. It probably shouldn't be public quite yet, as there are still a number of problems. The standard image is very small. But it is sufficient to run file-in, which makes it easy to add new features." - SmallWorld readme.

One of the nice aspects of the Smalltalk syntax is that it's is simple to use and simple to implement for small systems. This makes it useful for many different applications unlike more complex languages.

Keep up the good work Tim!
